The Ambush designer and director of jewellery for Dior Men caters to female B-ball fans with this crossover with Nike and the NBA
The correlation between the world of sports with that of fashion is very closely interwoven, especially when you think of figures like Beyonce, Rihanna and the Kardashians. These icons are in as much of the limelight as the glorified sports game they attend. But for the past seasons, both fashion fans and B-ball fans have had to come to terms with games being delayed or cancelled. At NBA games, the crowd is no longer present and neither are the celebrities.
Yoon Ahn, the co-founder of Ambush, has partnered with Nike and the National Basketball Association for a fashion collection bringing back the glamour of courtside style. As the first female designer to join forces with the two organisations, she is delivering to female basketball fans everywhere fresh style inspired by the ’90s with distinct Ambush aesthetics.
Ahn shares her love for basketball with this capsule collection featuring parkas, jersey tops, sports bras, track pants, high-top sneakers and even logo-branded basketballs. She reimagines the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets uniforms through her multi-dimensional point of view. “I thought of all these amazing strong female characters from the ’90s who would come out in men’s clothes,” she explains. “I wanted to bring in more feminine forms,” and that was precisely what she did with the line. Transforming the tearaway basketball warm-up pants into an insulated trouser with a double waistband, the classic NBA jersey is also given a tweak here and there to spice things up.
The project began with a conversation about making women feel proud to represent their favourite teams. We are considering how to balance the culture of the sport without losing the style.
Completing the collection is the new Nike Dunk—Ambush style. Combining Japanese bike, car and truck culture into footwear, Yoon created these elongated and heightened kicks with the Nike logo extending back and curving behind the heels to resemble bike pipes.
