Palang Pracharath candidate sues two senior Democrats for slander

Palang Pracharath’s Thawee Suraban filed complaints with Election Commission (EC) on Friday against two Democrats, Chuan Leekpai and Sathit Wongnongtaey, accusing them of defaming him during their election campaigns.

Thawee’s lawyer took the legal action, claiming the pair had violated election laws by slandering his client when they spoke on rally stages in April and May.

His lawyer submitted video clips of Democrat’s advisory chief Chuan’s and Sathit’s speeches on the campaigning on May 10thand April 27th as supporting evidence.

Thawee is a veteran politician, winning house seats eight times under the Democrat party banner in Trang province, which is a Chuan and Sathit stronghold.

In 2005, he defected to the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai party and became a party list MP. In this year’s general election, he has unofficially won a House seat under the banner of the Palang Pracharath party.

Meanwhile Kris Srifa, Pheu Thai candidate for Phang Nga’s Constituency 2, asked the EC for a re-count of the ballotsfrom the general election, alleging that there were counting irregularities.

Kris said the result of the voting in the general election shows that he lost to a candidate from Palang Pracharath by only 109 votes, despite the fact he had led almost throughout the counting process.
