Thai police are using cargo containers, razor wire and steel barricades to block traffic at Chamaimaruchet and Makkhawan Rangsan bridges today (Tuesday) to prevent protesters from getting close to Government House.
The protesters, led by Jatuporn Prompan and Nittitorn Lumlua, are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, contending that his eight-year term in office is due to end by August 24th.
Protesters started gathering this morning at the Lan Khon Mueang (town square), in front of the old City Hall. A stage has been set up and sound system installed for protest leaders to address the crowd.
Rallies are also planned at the Democracy and Victory Monuments.
Jatuporn said earlier that, if the crowd spills over from Lan Khon Mueang onto the roads, the protesters will march to Government House.
Pol Maj-Gen Warakorn Yuyangthai, commander of Special Branch Police Division 3, said today that police are on standby to observe the situation, adding that there is nothing to be worried about.
A press conference is scheduled this morning for 10am at the Metropolitan Police Bureau.
He said that security at and around Government House is the responsibility of Metropolitan Police Bureau.
Opposition parties, academics and political activist groups have been putting pressure on the prime minister to step down by August 24th.
The opposition parties’ petition, seeking the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the prime minister’s term, has already been sent to the court by House Speaker Chuan Leekpai.
