An armed man robbed a gold shop in a Big C supermarket in Pattani province, southern Thailand, on Monday night. Police said the thief stole a total of nine necklaces worth 15-baht weight in gold.
According to CTV footage, the robber walked by the Yang Hub Teng gold and jewellery shop in the Big C superstore in tambon Rusa Milae numerous times, before entering the shop and threatening the female saleswoman with what appeared to be a 9mm handgun. He then snatched gold necklaces from the glass display case and fled the building, escaping on a green Honda Wave motorbike toward Pattani’s city centre.
CCTV footage showed a man who appeared to be 25 – 35 years old and roughly 170 centimetres tall. He was wearing a black shirt, black trousers, a wide-brimmed hat and a face mask. The police are currently searching for him.
This is at least the second gold heist to have been reported in Thailand this April. A previous gold heist took place earlier this month in Nakhon Ratchasima, northeastern Thailand, where a robber stole more 4 million baht worth of gold. He was later caught in a hotel in Pattaya. Both robberies took place in a supermarket: the first was in Lotus’s, the second was in Big C.
