Fossils of “primitive shellfish” were discovered yesterday at the recently renovated Siam Square in Bangkok.

Supatcha Damrongmanee posted photos of the fossils on Facebook yesterday, saying she noticed them while walking through Siam Square, a shopping and entertainment area in Bangkok.

Fossil expert Dr. Kantaphon Suraprasit from Chulalongkorn University says they look like real fossils. Kantaphon said they are most likely “ammonites,” which were sea creatures closely related to today’s octopuses and squids. Ammonites died out around 66 million years ago, roughly the same time that the dinosaurs disappeared.

The paleontology expert expects that the fossil came from Africa, hidden inside imported sandstone used to recently repave the floor at Siam Square. The fossils were hidden inside the rock and only revealed once the sandstone had been polished.
