3 workers killed in structure collapse at One Bangkok construction site

Three workers were killed and four others injured when a structure collapsed at a construction site for the luxury complex One Bangkok, which is said to be the biggest real estate project in Thailand with a budget of more than 120 billion baht. The massive project has paused construction following orders from the Bangkok Labor Protection and Welfare Office and the safety Center for Workplace. Officials are now investigating the incident.

It is believed that the structure collapsed while workers were pouring mortar on the first story of the building, which is off Rama 4 Road in the capital’s Pathum Wan district. The four workers who were injured in the collapse were treated at home. The bodies of three other workers were later found.

Over 100,000 square metres of the first floor had already been completed, and it is believed that the supporting structure underneath gave out when the mortar was poured, according to the superintendent of the Lumpini Police Station. An official report on the collapse will be released by the Council of Engineers Thailand after an assessment.

Italian-Thai Development’s construction company released a statement saying they are sorry for the loss and promised to provide assistance to the victims’ families.

One Bangkok, which is said to be a “new global landmark destination,” will house luxury residences, hotel rooms, office space, shops, and an arts and cultural centre. It is expected to be finished by 2027.
