Head of the “Pheu Thai Family”, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, said Sunday that she is ready to stand as the party’s candidate for prime minister in the general elections and that the Pheu Thai Party will only work with parties which embrace democracy.
Responding to a reporter’s question about her readiness to be the party’s candidate, on the campaign trail in the north-eastern province of Udon Thani, Paetongtarn is quoted to have said “I am ready because we have come to this point to win in a landslide, to realise our policies which are promised to the people. Policies to improve the lives of the people.”
She also said, however, that she is ready to back off “if there are people who are more appropriate.”
Asked about speculation that the Pheu Thai Party may allow Palang Pracharath Party Leader General Prawit Wongsuwan to assume the premiership, if the two parties agree to form a coalition government, Paetongtarn said that the party will not join hands with parties which do not subscribe to democratic principles.
Apart from Paetongtarn, the other potential candidate for the top post is speculated to be real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin, but the head of the “Pheu Thai family” said she does not know who the candidates are.
Paetongtarn is the youngest daughter of fugitive exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
